Read a Research Article

Navigate a scholarly article strategically, understand what the researchers actually did and found, and capture the information your inquiry needs.

You are not supposed to read every word on the first pass.

Research articles are written for scholars, but their predictable structure gives you a map. Start wide, move toward the sections you need, and read deeply only when the article earns your attention.

The goal is understanding, not surviving every sentence.

Read in three passes

Each pass has a different purpose. You may stop after Pass 1 if the article is not relevant.

Get Oriented

Goal: Decide whether the article deserves more time.

  • Read the title and abstract.
  • Scan headings, figures, and captions.
  • Read the discussion or conclusion.
  • Identify the topic, purpose, and main finding.
You should be able to say: “This study investigates ___ and may help me understand ___.”

Understand the Study

Goal: Target the sections that answer your questions.

  • Locate the research question or hypothesis.
  • Identify the sample and research method.
  • Study the results, charts, and tables.
  • Compare the findings with the authors’ interpretation.
You should be able to explain what the researchers did, found, and believe the findings mean.

Goal: Read deeply enough to use the study responsibly.

  • Examine methods and possible bias.
  • Check whether results support the conclusion.
  • Identify limitations and unanswered questions.
  • Decide what specific claim the study can support.
You should be able to qualify the evidence and explain how confidently it applies to your inquiry.

Abstract

A compressed overview of the problem, method, major findings, and conclusion. Use it to decide whether the article is relevant, not as a substitute for reading the study.

What was the purpose or research question?
Who or what was studied?
What was the main finding?
Read closely: the purpose, sample, and main result. Mark unfamiliar terms, but do not stop to define every one yet.
The Why

Introduction & Literature Review

Explains the problem, summarizes previous scholarship, identifies a gap, and leads toward the study’s question or hypothesis.

What is already known or debated?
What gap does this study attempt to address?
What question or hypothesis guides the study?
Skim strategically: opening context, repeated ideas, the research gap, and the final paragraphs where the question often appears.
The How

Methods

Describes the participants or data, research design, materials, procedures, and analysis. This section determines what the study is capable of showing.

Who or what was included, and excluded?
How were variables measured or information collected?
Could the design introduce bias or limit generalization?
Read for structure: sample, setting, procedure, comparison groups, and measurement. Technical calculations may be skimmed unless you need to evaluate them.
What Happened

Results

Reports the findings without fully explaining their meaning. Tables and figures often reveal the most important patterns.

What changed, differed, or was associated?
How large or meaningful was the result?
Do the visuals match the written summary?
Separate finding from interpretation: “Group A scored higher” is a result. Why that happened belongs in the discussion.
What It Means

Discussion

Interprets the findings, connects them with earlier research, considers alternative explanations, and explains why the results matter.

How do the authors explain the findings?
Do they make a causal claim or describe an association?
Does the interpretation go beyond the evidence?
Watch the verbs: “suggests,” “is associated with,” and “causes” make very different levels of claim.
The Boundaries

Limitations & Conclusion

Identifies weaknesses, unanswered questions, and the population or setting to which the findings may apply. The conclusion states the larger takeaway.

What can this study not prove?
Where might the findings not apply?
What future research do the authors recommend?
Do not skip limitations. They give you the language needed to qualify the source accurately in your own argument.

Translate academic language

Dense sentences become manageable when you identify the actor, action, and finding.

“After controlling for prior achievement and socioeconomic status, participation in structured peer discussion was positively associated with students’ argumentation scores; however, the observational design precludes causal inference.”
Who or what?Students participating in structured peer discussion
What happened?They tended to earn higher argumentation scores.
What is the limit?The study shows an association, not proof that discussion caused the scores.
In plain language: Students who participated in structured peer discussions generally scored higher, but the study cannot prove that the discussions caused the improvement.

Research vocabulary worth knowing

Learn the terms that change how you interpret the findings.

SampleThe people, texts, events, or data actually studied.
VariableA factor measured, compared, or changed.
MethodologyThe overall approach used to answer the question.
CorrelationTwo variables change together; causation is not established.
Statistical significanceA result unlikely to be explained by chance alone; not necessarily large or important.
GeneralizabilityHow well findings may apply beyond the original sample.
LimitationA boundary affecting what the study can conclude.
ImplicationA possible meaning, consequence, or application of the findings.
Causal claimA claim that one factor produces a change in another.

Capture what you will actually use

Do not copy the whole article into your notes. Record information that helps you explain and use the study responsibly.

Research Focus

The question, problem, or hypothesis the study addresses.

Study Design

The sample, setting, method, and type of evidence collected.

Key Finding

The specific result, not merely the topic or author’s opinion.

Limits and Use

What qualifies the finding and which claim or perspective it can support.

After reading, decide what the article can do

Use for background

It explains the issue, research conversation, or important terms.

Use as evidence

Its methods and findings provide support for a specific, appropriately qualified claim.

Use with limitations, or not at all

The study may offer perspective, but important differences or weaknesses restrict its value.

Mrs. Adams' Tip

If a paragraph makes no sense, that does not mean you are “bad at research.” Identify what job the section is doing, recover the main idea, and decide whether that level of detail is necessary for your purpose.
